Exit surveys represent an attempt to understand whether the loss of a good employee was avoidable. Their main purpose is to uncover problems that might lead to further unwanted turnover if they are not addressed.

An exit survey for voluntary turnover is best done between one and three months after the employee has left. The persons will likely have started a new position and feel more comfortable about the choice. At this point, employees are more likely to cite factors they might have hesitated to mention before. The timing and method of exit surveys have a lot of impact on response rate.
